The Library  is committed to support research-based learning. Students from Pre U/Diploma, and first year students would be taught Generic Information skills while final year undergraduates and diploma students would be taught the Research-Based Information Skills. Similar workshops would be conducted for postgraduates in response to request from the Schools. The Library would also conduct workshops for staff on a regular basis.

Research Based

​For all Undergraduates and Diploma students who have been assigned assignment topics.

Duration: 1 - 1.5 hours

I. Contents

1. Explain assignment / topic.

2. Identify important keywords. Identify synonyms.

3. Refine search strategy using Boolean Operators.

4. Using the search terms, search library materials from SearchAll.

5. Highlight specific databases or websites important for assignment / topic.

6. Understand the elements for scholarly Academic Journals such as journal; article; author; volume; issue number; DOI; pages; database name.

II. Learning Outcome

1. Explores general information sources to increase familiarity with the topic

2. Students will be able to identify key concepts  and terms related to their assignments / topics

3. Students will be able to refine the search strategy.

4. Students will be able to find library materials related to their assignments/topics

5. Understand the format of scholarly articles.

​For Final Year Undergraduates and Diploma students undertaking Final Year Projects.

Duration: 2 hours

I. Contents

1. Explore the topic / research title by : -

a. Using a Concept map.

b. Identify important keywords.

c. Identify synonyms or related terms.

d. Build search strategy using Boolean Operators.

2. Use the search statement to find related resources in: -

a. SearchAll

b. Databases

c. Affiliated University Libraries resources (if any)

3. Understand the elements for scholarly Academic Journals such as journal; article; author; volume; issue number; DOI; pages; database name

II. Learning Outcome

1. Student will be able to identify key concepts and terms that describe the topic.

a. Able to visually work through their topics.

b. Brainstorming for keywords.

c. Learn to expand the keywords more relevant to their topic.

d. Combine search terms by Boolean Operators

2. Student will be able to constructs a search strategy using appropriate terms for the research tools.

a. Able to use basic and advanced search techniques in various research tools.

3. Understand the format of scholarly articles.
