The Library  is committed to support research-based learning. Students from Pre U/Diploma, and first year students would be taught Generic Information skills while final year undergraduates and diploma students would be taught the Research-Based Information Skills. Similar workshops would be conducted for postgraduates in response to request from the Schools. The Library would also conduct workshops for staff on a regular basis.

I. Contents

1. Reading List Database:

  • Access to the database according to a particular programme and subject.
  • Explain Location and Call number in the catalog record.
  • Explain the location of an item by using Shelf Plan.

2. Demo SearchAll

         a. How to search for an item by Author, Title, keywords.

         b. How to limit by printed books, e-books, articles from magazines.

         c. Explain the elements of an article from magazine.

3. Show how to do basic research using Research Starter.

II. Learning Outcome

1. Student will be able to use Reading List Database effectively and efficiently to locate recommended textbooks.

2. Use SearchAll to find library materials such as books, magazines and newspapers.

3. Student will be able to get background information on a topic and do assignment.

Part 1: Information Search

1. Reading List Database:

  • Access to the database according to a particular programme and subject.
  • Explain Location and Call number in the catalog record.
  • Explain the location of an item by using Shelf Plan.

2. Demo SearchAll

  • How to search for an item by Author, Title, keywords.
  • Explain Location and Call number for books.
  • How to read online books.
  • How to use Boolean Operators.

3. Show how to do basic research using Research Starter.

4. Understand the elements for scholarly Academic Journals such as journal; article; author; volume; issue number; DOI; pages;  database name

Part 2: Authority of information sources

1. Students analyzing a source (eg. a scholarly journal article, a book review, an opinion piece, a news article, a blog post, a twitter feed, etc). Students examine the source by answering the following:

  • Who is the author? / who is responsible for it?
  • What type of publication is this?
  • Who is the intended audience?
  • What is the purpose of this writing? / Why it exists?
  • How it was created? Was it reviewed by experts?
  • What type of writing is this?
  • What makes it credible or not for different kinds of uses?

II. Learning Outcome

1. Students will be able to use Reading List Database effectively and efficiently to locate recommended materials.

2. Use SearchAll to find library materials such as books, magazines, newspapers and scholarly articles.

3. Students will be able to get background information on their topics and do assignment.

4. Understand the elements for scholarly articles.

6. Students will be able to evaluate the credibility of those sources.

7. Students will be able to identify and explain different types of information sources.

8. Students will be able to identify the type of sources suitable for their assignments.
